The Art of Body Language

Body language plays a very important role to ensure the success of your presentation or public speaking session. As is important to show confidence in delivering the speech, you need to learn some good body language techniques before going up the stages.

Here are some tips to improve on the non-verbal communication ;

1) The personal appearance image
This is the basic part that will sent a silent message on who the speaker is to the audience. Though the perception may not be correct to the audience's eyes, it is often the accepted view in context. The clothing, hairstyle, shoes, and colours indicate the self image that the presenter brings to the audience.

2) Body language
The eye contact, the smile, the way the presenters stand or sit, the face gestures and the hand movement are all very important in the body language tools. At the starting of the presentation, the presenter need to establish the eye contact to a specific individual for a few second and try to do the same to the others in a very quick glance.
  This is to create the feeling of importance to them as if saying "I am talking to you now". Yes, sometimes it is hard to look at everyone if it is a big crowd. One way that may help is to start from the right of the hall, going to the center and to the left along the presentation.

3) Voice projection
This is another critical factor to consider. The presenter must make sure his voice can be heard by everyone in the hall. Always check with the last person in the hall and make sure of doing the microphone sound check before presenting.
  The tone has enormous impact to create the feeling of happiness, sad, angry, or nervous. The tempo of either to go faster or slower needs to be emphasized here. If it he explaining part, the faster tempo can be used but go slower when emphasizing the important points.

4) Physical movement
How you carry yourself as a presenter can convey many massages. The upright posture indicates confidence level, a rigid posture tells a discomfort feeling, a comfortable light walk and smile may promote a comfortable situation.
  To create a more interesting presentation, the use of hand must be practiced. Use both hand gesture based on the message to be delivered.

A final note on effective non-verbal communication is to always practice using all the theories above. If you are presenting an important topic, do a proper preparation on the content and start to apply the body language techniques above. Be prepared and be patient as this whole process might be difficult at first. But, once you are already one step in becoming seccessful presenter.
